In this riveting story of survival, author Benjamin Franklin recounts the emotional trauma, fear and brutality of sexual abuse during the course of his childhood under the jurisdiction of the Christian Brothers Regime run by the Catholic Church in Ireland.

After the death of his 33-year-old mother at the tender age of 7, he and his younger brother Christopher were committed to the notorious Glin Industrial School, often referred to in the media and elsewhere as "The School from Hell" and "The School of Horror." It was at Glin that Benjamin experienced some of the most horrendous abuse imaginable, and where he remained until released after his 15th birthday, in a shockingly poor state of health.

Believing the Unbelievable: Surviving the Cruelty of the Christian Brothers Regime charts the "nightmare years" of the author at Glin — the humiliation, hard labor, near-starvation and sexual abuse he received at the hands of the school's authorities. Set in southern Ireland, the book was written intensely raw and has been reviewed as a truly captivating and earth-shattering account of what went on inside the Christian Brothers Regime.

Benjamin writes about receiving solace and peace from documenting this traumatic episode in his life.

"All my life I wanted to tell someone about my childhood experiences, but I only found the courage and confidence after the abuse in the Industrial Schools was recently exposed with other survivors speaking out," Benjamin said.

Finding strength of character in the need to survive, the author hopes his story might inspire others who have suffered in similar circumstances.
