Xaverian Missionary Fathers under suspicion

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A group representing victims of clergy abuse wants the pope to investigate another Roman Catholic religious order.

The Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests is asking Springfield Bishop Timothy McDonnell to use his influence to ask the Vatican to investigate the Xaverian Missionary Fathers.

SNAP says three Xaverian brothers have been accused of abuse, dating back decades. The group appealed to McDonnell on Tuesday because it says he has been helpful in the past.

"He's been supportive in the past and written me letters and said he contacted Rome on my behalf,” said William Nash, an Ashfield resident and abuse victim.

A spokesman for McDonnell said the bishop will review the request, although the Xaverian order does not operate within the Springfield Diocese.
