Two Franciscan priests were placed under investigation Wednesday for suspected sexual abuse at a centre for the handicapped, court sources said.

The head of the Saint Francis of Assisi Home in the southern city of Cordoba and another priest were both targeted by the probe.

The age of the alleged victim or victims was not revealed.

The two priests were barred from approaching the centre or from making any contact with those working or residing there, the sources said.

The bishop of Cordoba said in a statement he had "acted within his jurisdiction, with the good of the victims in mind and taking the necessary measures to determine responsibility."

The newspaper El Mundo said police were alerted to the case through an anonymous letter.

It said the case was already known to the institution, where internal measures had been taken to avoid it happening again.

The newspaper said the centre had intended to report the two priests to the authorities but were forced to act earlier due to the letter.
