INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Archdiocese of Indianapolis has reached a cash settlement with a man who alleges that a former Catholic priest sexually abused him as a child.

As part of the settlement, the archdiocese will pay the man $199,000 and publicly apologize for the abuse he said he suffered at the hands of Harry Monroe.

The man's lawsuit claimed he was 14 when Monroe, who was then a priest, sexually abused him repeatedly in 1977 while both were at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Monroe faces 12 other lawsuits from other alleged victims. He was removed from ministry in 1984.

Archdiocese spokesman Greg Otolski says it is the first time it has paid out money to end an abuse lawsuit.
