NEW YORK, NY (KMOX) -- St. Louis native and current New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan goes under the microscope of the New York Times in a lengthy article on how he has handled clergy abuse cases in the past.

The Sunday piece largely focused on how Archbishop Dolan handled an abuse allegation years ago against a priest in St. Louis when Dolan was an auxiliary bishop here charged with handling clergy abuse cases for the Archdiocese.

In that case, the Times reports, Dolan swiftly took the side of the accused priest and, with the support of the Archdiocese, turned around and sued the accuser.

Coming to Archbishop Dolan's defense was Bill Donahue with the Catholic Rights League.

"They teased the reader that 'Oh, well some of these professional victims' groups like SNAP weren't happy with some of the decisions that he made', but it never really indicts him," said Donahue, who called the NY Times article "scurrilous".

Archbishop Dolan, meanwhile, tells the New York Times he believed he handled the case properly, though he says in some ways he would act differently today.
