Three dioceses are still not following proper guidelines for safeguarding children in the Catholic Church. A report published today also reveals that complaints about priests continue to be made.

The report found that most parishes have safeguarding procedures in place and that children should be safer in the Church than before.

But it also found that some within the Church are struggling to change their attitude.

The National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church reported 197 new allegations of abuse in the last year:

- All claims are historical, all those reporting abuse are now adults

- 83 alleged abusers are dead

- 113 abusers are alive, some of whom are under garda investigation

Although trained volunteers are in place in most parishes, three are still failing to meet proper safety guidelines and some survivors of abuse say the government is still failing to adequately protect children.

The board has urged Archbishop Diarmuid Martin to inform them of any evidence that parishes are not following abuse-reporting guidelines.
