Adelaide Catholic Archbishop Philip Wilson is under increasing pressure to explain his role in what has been described as a cover-up by a victim of sexual abuse.

The abuse occurred when the Adelaide Archbishop was an office-holder in the NSW diocese of Maitland-Newcastle in the late 1970s and 1980s and living with convicted pedophile Father Jim Fletcher. Fletcher was regularly abusing Peter Gogarty, then aged 12.

Mr Gogarty has now lodged a complaint with NSW police about Archbishop Wilson’s involvement in a “conspiracy of silence”.

The Archbishop has denied the claims and a spokeswoman said the church had not been contacted by the police, although it would “welcome the opportunity to be involved” in an inquiry.

"The allegations against Archbishop Wilson, raised on ABC TV News, are completely without basis," a written statement said.

Archbishop Wilson was recently re-elected as chairman of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference.
