The sound of church bells ringing at St. Pius church Monday afternoon brought a sense of calm and peace.

But an issue rumbling across the pews of Catholic churches is the priest sex scandal. In the latest twist, lawyers for the Vatican said bishops involved in U.S. sex abuse scandals were not Vatican employees.

The lawyers made the claims Monday, in hopes of dismissing a lawsuit over a sex abuse case in Kentucky, where a priest was accused of molesting three children.

“Yeah, it’s a lot of people saying, making comments,” said St. Pius church member Lupe Camacho. “I think when you have strong faith, you have to support your people.”

Vatican lawyers also defended the Holy See regarding a 1962 document that barred bishops from reporting abuse to police. The document, “Crimen Sollicitationis” is Latin for “crimes of solicitation.” Vatican lawyers said the diocese in question knew nothing of the Crimen Sollicitationis and did not use it.

Some Catholics in El Paso said the sex abuse scandal is not reducing the crowd at church on Sunday.

“I really don’t think there has been any type of impact here at St. Pius, “ Yvonne Gomez said. “The church is filled every Sunday.”

She said Catholics should stand on their faith through the scandal.

“You don’t abandon your faith, because your faith will never abandon you,” Gomez said.
