A retired Garda who investigated cases of child sex abuse in the Donegal Gaeltacht has welcomed indications that an audit of child protection in the Diocese of Raphoe could be complete by the end of 2010.

The head of the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church, Ian Elliot, said yesterday that he was confident the country’s bishops would give the green light to an investigation of Raphoe at their meeting in mid-June.

Mr Elliott said he had discussed claims of cover-ups by the diocese with Falcarragh-based former detective Martin Ridge and the Bishop of Raphoe, Dr Philip Boyce.

Mr Ridge was involved in the investigations that uncovered a horrific series of abuse cases involving Fr Eugene Greene and school-teacher Denis McGinley, both of whom were later convicted.

He’s welcoming the development and said he hopes it will bring some solace to abuse survivors
