A leading charity that supports men and women who have experienced sexual violence during childhood has said it is disappointed that Cardinal Sean Brady intends to stay on as head of the Catholic Church in Ireland.

The Cardinal, said in a statement last night that in the years that remain to him as Archbishop of Armagh, he hopes to engage with survivors of clerical abuse, to aid healing, repentance and renewal.

This morning ‘One in Four' director Maeve Lewis said that the cardinal's failure to report Brendan Smith to the authorities allowed many other children to be sexually abused.

The Cardinal was present when victims of paedophile priest Fr. Brendan Smith were forced to swear an oath of secrecy in 1975.
