The pall of paedophilia and sexual abuse continues to hang over the Catholic Church worldwide.

Recent revelations that thousands of crimes against young children and church members have been ignored and allowed to linger for decades is a blight on the Church.

It has caused deep embarrassment to the Church and Pope Benedict XVI who has been forced to apologise to victims as more and more paedophile priests are uncovered.

Unfortunately, more questions have been raised about the Church in Australia after allegations made on ABC television.

At the centre of the allegations is former Bishop of Wollongong Philip Wilson, who has been accused of failing to act against paedophile clergy while working in the Newcastle-Maitland diocese, described as the epicentre of Catholic clerical sexual abuse in Australia.

Bishop Wilson, now Archbishop of Adelaide and believed to be heir apparent to Sydney's Cardinal George Pell, has denied any knowledge of the abuse.

Regardless, the allegations involving at least two young men and two young women are shocking.

They must immediately be investigated by the Church and police.
