  Pope Decries Child Abuse While His Satraps Resist Civil Penalties

In recent weeks, Pope Benedict XVI has owned up to the pedophile priest scandal in much stronger terms than he has in the past, but church officials throughout the world continue to battle tirelessly against laws that would make it easier for adult victims to file civil lawsuits against their childhood abusers. At a press conference on a plane to Portugal, where the pope was to speak at the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, he acknowledged that the sex abuse crisis is a "terrifying" example of church failings.
