Last year a gravely ill pregnant woman was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix with heart failure. Doctors advised the woman that the pregnancy was literally killing her. She agreed to an abortion. One major problem: St. Joseph’s is a Catholic hospital.

Since the woman was too ill to be transferred to another hospital in time to save her life, Sister Margaret McBride, hospital administrator, approved the procedure. Yet when Bishop Thomas Olmsted received word that Sister McBride approved an abortion, he passed down the harshest penalty of the Catholic church, excommunication.

Excommunication?? For saving the life of a gravely ill woman? Is this the same Catholic church known for its sordid shell games with pedophile priests throughout the globe?

I understand this as just another example of how the twisted logic of male supremacy coupled with theological dogmatism becomes a dangerous weapon in the name of God.

Besides, didn’t somebody important to the Catholic Church suggest something to the effect of, “The Sabbath was made for humanity. Not humanity for the Sabbath.”??
