The Springfield Diocese struggles with financial woes and this time, they'll be cutting from within.

49 layoffs are expected by July 1st as the diocese struggles to close a 5 million dollar budget shortfall.

The news was spread around local churches Sunday morning.

St. Theresa's in South Hadley was part of last year's massive reorganization. Over a dozen churches were closed and merged as the church grappled with budget issues in 2009.

CBS 3 asked Father Richard Bondi if it was nice to see the cuts spare the churches this go around.

"I think the Diocese has to realize that it goes both ways," he says.

"We're all one church together. The Roman Catholic diocese of Springfield is really one church under one pastor, who is the Bishop of the diocese," says Bondi.

As of now, officials say many departments will be reduced, some will be eliminated, but there are no plans to touch the churches.

Names of those to be laid off haven't been released, but the diocese confirms seven clergy or "religious workers" will be let go.
