[the letter]

The Roman Catholic Church has been the center of negative attention lately between allegations of sex abuse and budget problems.

And it seems it's not over yet..

22News got a hold of a letter to co-workers in the Church from the Bishop.

Because of the financial problems facing the church, the Diocese is forced to cut 40 percent of its budget by July 1st..

What the letter explains is that the cut entails chopping nearly 50 positions.

In the letter, Bishop Timothy McDonnell announced, come July 1st, the overall number of staff members will go from 138 to just 89 employees.

This includes 7 clergy and religious positions.

In addition, the work schedules for the remaining employees will be scaled back.

McDonnell says lots of these fiscal problems stem from unpaid bills by parishes and subsidized education in Catholic elementary and high schools.

Both required the Diocese to tap into savings significantly.

This is after the Diocese has already closed several parishes and schools.

If you want to read the letter from the Bishop to the Church, you can do that on the Diocesan website .

For more on this 22News will take a closer look at the problems surrounding the Diocese in an in-depth two part series, called In the Shadows of the Cross.

It will air this Tuesday and Wednesday on 22News at 6:00.
