A big land deal Monday: Burlington College is buying the Vt. Roman Catholic Diocese headquarters in Burlington.

The diocese is selling the building and 32 acres overlooking Lake Champlain to help pay a $20 million settlement for 26 priest sex abuse cases.

The sale price was not released.

Burlington College says it's raising the money through private donors and tax-exempt bond financing. The college also has money set aside because it was planning to build a new, bigger, space.

About 200 students attend Burlington College. Jane O'Meara Sanders, the president of the college, says the school hopes to double that.

"This will afford us the opportunity to do so much more academic offerings-- we'll be able to do more arts and sciences, in particular our film program and our photography program will be able to have specially designed spaces-- they are our most popular programs. This property is giving us a new direction," O'Meara Sanders said.

Burlington College hopes to move by this winter. It is looking to sell its current building just down the street on North Avenue.
