NORWICH — Some Catholic churches in the Norwich Diocese might merge and others could close because of financial strain, one church official said.

If the cluster of churches in Norwich — St. Mary, St. Joseph and Sacred Heart — loses a priest, then the daily mass schedule could change, and some parishes may drop them completely, said Brian Daly, a member of a parish board at St. Mary.

If the cluster of churches in Norwich — St. Mary, St. Joseph and Sacred Heart — loses a priest, then the daily mass schedule could change, and some parishes may drop them completely, said Brian Daly, a member of a parish board at St. Mary.

The churches could also join a rotation of Sunday services, he said.

Daly said some of the other 13 parishes in the Norwich area, and 10 in the Willimantic area, may eventually have to merge.

Sister M. Elaine Moorcroft, principal of St. Mary-St. Joseph School in Willimantic, said the pre-k to eighth-grade school has room for 300 students, but only about half that number is enrolled.

Parishioners expect the Bishop of the Norwich Diocese, the Rev. Michael R. Cote, to decide by September which churches to close, which to merge, and which to leave alone.
