YOUNGSTOWN - The Youngstown Catholic Diocese this morning announced plans to merge seven Trumbull County parishes into three as part of a Diocese-wide downsizing.

In Trumbull County, the diocese is planning to merge:

- St. Bernadette in Masury with St. Vincent de Paul in Vienna;

- St. James in Warren with SS. Cyril & Methodius in Warren; and

- St. Pius X, Christ Our King and St. Joseph, all in Warren.

Bishop George V. Murry said the number of worship sites for the new merged parishes will be determined at a later date.

Also as part of the plan, collaborative units are being formed which will mean one pastor serving more than one parish and worship site. Those collaborative units include: St. Stephen, Niles, with St. Mary Mineral Ridge; and St. Rose, Girard, with Our Lady of Perpetual Help, McDonald.

Other changes are being made in Mahoning, Ashtabula, Stark, Columbiana and Portage counties.

The changes come due to demographic shifts, fewer priests and the changing attitudes of Catholic people, the bishop said this morning. The plan is a result of discussions and analysis of the six-county diocese that began in the fall of 2008. Implementation will take place over the next two years.
