Cardinal Sean O'Malley, archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston

O'Malley Named Apolistic Visitor To Dublin Amid Clergy Abuse Crisis

Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley has been asked by the pope to help deal with the clergy abuse crisis in Ireland. He is one of several archbishops from around the world appointed as Apolistic Visitors to specific Irish dioceses.

O'Malley will work with the Archdiocese of Dublin beginning this fall, while retaining his position as Archbishop of Boston. In Ireland, the cardinal will study the Dublin diocese's abuse prevention policies, how it's handled abuse cases and how to best help victims.

"The Church must be unfailingly vigilant in protecting children and young people. Our ongoing efforts in the Archdiocese of Boston to ensure their safety will be helpful for the visitation," O'Malley said in a written statement Monday.

In explaining the purpose of the Visitation, the Vatican released a statement reading in part, "The Apostolic Visitors will set out to explore more deeply questions concerning the handling of cases of abuse and the assistance owed to the victims; they will monitor the effectiveness of and seek possible improvements to the current procedures for preventing abuse."

Cardinal O'Malley has been called on several times in the past to help dioceses deal with and heal from clergy sex abuse. He took over the Boston archdiocese in 2003, after the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law. Law left his position amid criticism over his handling of abusive priests.

O'Malley has also led the Palm Beach, Florida diocese and Fall River, Mass. diocese in the midst of those dioceses' turmoil over clergy sex abuse.
