The Vatican has announced details of a special inquiry into sexual abuse in the Catholic Church in Ireland.

An Apostolic Visitation, which was first signalled by Pope Benedict in a pastoral letter to the Catholics of Ireland in March, will take place during the Autumn.

The visit is part of an investigation aimed at eradicating clerical sex abuse. The panel of nine includes four archbishops of Irish descent, namely Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, retired Archbishop of Westminster and Cardinal O'Malley, Boston, USA; Archbishop Timothy Dolan, New York, Archbishop Thomas Collins, Toronto, and Archbishop Terence Prendergast SJ, Ottawa.

Speaking in March, Pope Benditc said: “I intend to hold an Apostolic Visitation of certain dioceses in Ireland, as well as seminaries and religious congregations. Arrangements for the Visitation, which is intended to assist the local Church on her path of renewal, will be made in cooperation with the competent offices of the Roman Curia and the Irish Episcopal Conference.”
