COPENHAGEN — Denmark's Catholic Church says it suspended a priest after learning he had been fined five years ago for possessing child pornography.

The priest was suspended last month but the church didn't give a reason at the time.

The Politiken newspaper reported Friday he had confessed to possessing 38 video clips with child pornography and was fined 6,000 kroner (about $1,000).

Church spokesman Stig Soerensen confirmed the priest was suspended because the church "recently learned" about the conviction. Soerensen said the priest returned to his home country, adding the suspension also applies there. He declined to give the priest's name or nationality.

Police dropped an investigation of alleged abuse in Denmark's small Catholic Church, saying the cases were too old.
