CORNER BROOK, N.L. — A man who says he was a former altar boy alleges he was abused decades ago by a priest who was recently suspended from his duties in Prince Edward Island, a newspaper report says.

The Western Star in Corner Brook says the man, who is originally from Bay St. George, N.L., filed a complaint about Rev. George Smith with police in Halifax, where he now lives.

The man spoke to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity.

The man says he was an altar boy between the ages of about 12 and 14 at St. Columcille Roman Catholic Church in St. Fintan's and he alleges two incidents of sexual abuse occurred between 1978 and 1980.

A spokesman for the Roman Catholic Church in Prince Edward Island could not be reached for comment on Saturday. The church said last week that Smith was out of the province and unavailable for comment.

A spokesman for Halifax police said Saturday that it would not be able to confirm a complaint had been filed.

Police in western Newfoundland confirmed last Wednesday that they have received an official complaint of abuse involving Smith and an investigation had been launched.
