Father Charles Curran, the priest of the Diocese of Rochester whose dissent from Catholic teaching led to his removal from a Catholic University teaching position in 1986 at the behest of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, has reiterated his support for homosexuality, contraception, and divorce in the June 5 issue of Newsweek.

Ignoring the worldwide surge in seminarians-- the number increased from 63,882 in 1978 to 117,024 in 2008-- Father Curran, now 76 and a professor of human values at Southern Methodist University, says that clerical celibacy has led to a loss of priestly vocations. He concludes by calling for "rewriting the celibacy laws as an initial edit-- a change on the way to redressing the multitude of other needed reforms," including the ordination of women.
