LEIGH SALES, PRESENTER: The Pope has given his clearest apology to date over the paedophile priest scandals.

At a mass in St Peter's Square marking the end of the Catholic Church’s year for priests, Pope Benedict XVI begged forgiveness for the abuse of children and pledged to do everything possible to stop it happening again.

Allegations of paedophilia by priests emerged last year in Ireland and there've been other revelations for years in the United States, Brazil and Australia.

The pontiff has faced allegations that he helped protect priests accused of misconduct while Archbishop of Munich and later as the Vatican's chief morals enforcer.

When he visited Sydney for World Youth Day, the Pope condemned priests involved in child sex abuse here and demanded they be punished.
