NSAC: APOLOGIES CAN NEVER BE OVERDONE, IT’S ACTION THAT IS OVERDUE

EVIDENCE of WILL and FORTITUDE TO SERIOUSLY ADDRESS CRISIS ARE LACKING IN POPE BENEDICT’S ADDRESS to PRIESTS

PRIESTS SHOULD RISE UP FOR REFORM

Neither the Pope nor the Church can overdo the apologies that must be given for what victims of sexual abuse by priests and nuns have suffered.

What is overdue and sadly lacking in Pope Benedict’s words today is clear and specific evidence of the will and fortitude to seriously address the crisis.

Words designed to pass for action to deflect the crisis and protect those responsible put the papacy to shame.

Besides an apology, Pope Benedict repeated today that “everything possible” should be done to stop abuse.

The Pope should:

* remove Cardinal Bernard Law from his position of influence in naming new bishops and his position of honor in Rome,

* release all the documents relating to sexual abuse no matter what’s in them

* remove all Bishops who cover-up abuse and moved predators giving them safe harbors to abuse again

* publish a global directory of priests who have abused

* clearly direct Bishops to change from opposing legislative reforms to leading the fights to pass laws strengthening the protection of children

* without question lead in a new direction of a preferential option for the innocent and vulnerable.

Priests gathered in the city of Rome and priests throughout the world, as men of God, should rise up for reform now.
