An advocacy group for victims of clergy sexual abuse Friday criticized the choice for the new bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP, said in a written statement that William Callahan, now auxiliary bishop in Milwaukee, comes from a diocese that has covered up for clerics the group claims were known to have sexually assaulted children.

While he could have identified these individuals, "despite the pleas of victims and their families he chose not to do this. Instead, these offenders are listed as ‘retired' or on ‘medical leave.' This is clearly not an example of the church doing everything in its power to protect children," SNAP said in its statement.
