Cardinal George Pell’s predicted nomination to the Congregation for Bishops was scuttled because of fears of negative publicity surrounding an abuse allegation made against him in 2002, according to Marco Tosatti, who writes for La Stampa.

In 2002, a career criminal with 39 convictions appeared on television and alleged that Cardinal Pell, while a seminarian, had molested him four decades earlier. A retired judge cleared Australia’s leading prelate following an investigation.
