Augsburg, Germany - A former German bishop, Walter Mixa whose resigned this year after admitting slapping teenagers in his care, has upset former aides by moving back into his bishop's palace.

Diocesan spokeswoman Kathi Marie Ulrich confirmed without comment a newspaper report that Mixa, 69, was living in his long-time apartment in the building opposite the cathedral of the German city of Augsburg.

Diocesan aides and other German Catholic bishops engineered Mixa's resignation in April after he took two weeks to grudgingly admit he had slapped teenagers and mis-spent orphanage funds three decades ago. Allegations of sex abuse proved unfounded.

Augsburg Diocese sources voiced outrage at the return of the conservative bishop whose career has been marked his assertive tone. Mixa reportedly took time out in a Swiss sanatorium after stepping down.

The newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine quoted Mixa's lawyer saying the ex-bishop had a right to his apartment.

"He can't live in a tent," said the lawyer.
