The Boston Archdiocese placed Reverend Dominic Menna on administrative leave Sunday, after learning of complaints of abuse 50 years ago.

Fr. Menna has been a priest in the area since 1958, and is now a senior priest in residence at St. Mary's Church in Quincy. Parishioners were told the news during the Sunday morning mass.

"It's very difficult for all the parishioners and the whole community," parishioner Eileen Campbell said.

Frank Flora knows Fr. Menna well -- he grew up in Quincy and attended St. Mary's School.

"I was an altar boy, too, for six years. Not once did anything even close like that happen," Flora said.

Law enforcement has been notified of the allegations, and an investigation is underway. The Archdiocese said its decision to place him on administrative leave does not represent a determination of his guilt or innocent regarding the accusations.

Fr. Menna was at St. Mary's in the '50s and '60s, before he was moved to other area churches. That happened at around the time of the alleged abuse.

"I recognize that news of these allegations may be a source of distress for many people," stated Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley. "My prayers and concern are with all people who are impacted by this matter."

The Church said it hopes to resolve the situation as soon as possible.
