Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The former Grand Chief of the Tlicho is in Winnipeg this week to attend Canada's first Truth and Reconciliation event.

Former residential school student, George Mackenzie, said he wants to hear what elders from around the country have to say about their experiences.

He also wants to hear how governments intend on fulfilling the apology made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2008.

"Apology is just a word in itself," he said. "I said it two years ago, an apology is good, but now after they've apologized, are they going to make any written plan to fulfill their apology?"

Mackenzie said he was disappointed when the Conservative government recently cut the funding from the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, which supported programs for residential school survivors.

He wants to see how the government will make amends for decades of forcing Aboriginal children from their homes to attend the mission schools.
