HARTFORD, Conn. —

The Hartford Archdiocese has asked police to investigate after it discovered a Roman Catholic priest may have taken more than a million dollars from a Waterbury parish for personal use, archdiocese officials said Saturday.

The Rev. Kevin J. Gray, former pastor at Sacred Heart/Sagrado Corazon Parish in Waterbury, may have taken the money over a seven-year period, the archdiocese said in a statement. The archdiocese said it was working with the parish to figure exactly out how much money is missing.

The missing funds were discovered during a routine financial review that had occurred in the past few months, said the Rev. John Gatzak, an archdiocese spokesman. They involved a combination of parish savings and money that should have been used to pay certain debts, such as insurance premiums, Gatzak said.

Gatzak declined to comment on how officials believe the money was spent, citing the police investigation that the archdiocese requested May 21.

Gray had been Sacred Heart's pastor from January 2003 until April 15, when he was granted a medical leave, Gatzak said. Gray has more recently been suspended from performing any duties as a priest as a result of discovery of the missing money, Gatzak said.

No one answered at a listing for the parish Saturday.
