ST. PETERSBURG - A 40-year-old volunteer in a children's program at Northside Baptist Church was arrested this morning on charges he molested and raped a boy whose parents are church members, according to St. Petersburg police.

Stephen Charles Greeley, of 880 South Village Drive N., Apt. 205, was charged with sexual battery and lewd and lascivious molestation.

Authorities would not give the exact age of the boy, except to say he is under 12.

More than a year ago, Greeley, who is an unpaid volunteer at the church, met the boy and his parents there, at 6000 38th Ave. N., said St. Petersburg police spokesman Bill Proffitt. A few months ago, Greeley offered to babysit the child at his apartment and did so at least twice, police said.

On May 23, the boy's parents found him acting-out sexually at their home, which was something they had never seen before, Proffitt said. When they asked him about his behavior, he told them Greeley had performed sexual acts on him at his apartment, Proffitt said.

The following day, the boy's father contacted the pastor of the church to tell him about the allegations. The boy's father told deputies that the pastor said, "If you don't call the Child Abuse Hotline, I need to." The father of the boy then did.

According to the boy's teacher, the boy had been an excellent student before the period during which the alleged molestation occurred, Proffitt said. Afterward, his behavior changed for the worse, and his academic performance slipped.

Greeley is visually impaired, does not possess a driver's license and does not have any criminal charges in his background. Detectives do not believe there are any other victims, Proffitt said.
