ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- The U.S. Supreme Court will not stop a lawsuit that accuses the Vatican of transferring a priest from city to city despite repeated accusations of sexual abuse.

The decision drew a quick response from David Clohessy of St. Louis, national director of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests.

"We're thrilled this brave abuse victim is finally going to have his day in court and have an opportunity to expose the corruption of church officials who knowingly moved a dangerous predator from country to country," Clohessy said.

"It's a long, long tough struggle with a long way to go," said Clohessy. "But this court ruling is evidence that finally the enormous wall of silence concerning clergy sex crimes and coverups -- even at the highest level of the Church -- is crumbling at least a little bit."

According to Clohessy, this ruling "shows that when victims are brave and persistent and turn to the secular justice system for help, sometimes there is at least a chance to finally unearth these long-buried truths about clergy sex crimes."

On Monday, the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal from the Vatican, which wanted the federal courts to throw out the lawsuit that seeks to hold the Roman Catholic Church responsible for moving the Reverend Andrew Ronan in the mid-1950's from Ireland to Illinois to Oregon despite sex abuse allegations.

Ronan died in 1992.
