SPOKANE -- KREM 2 News has confirmed there is a new bishop for the Catholic Diocese of Spokane.

He is 61-year-old Bishop Blase Cupich of the Catholic Diocese of Rapid City, South Dakota.

On the diocese website, Bishop Cupich often issues statements on controversial issues of the day including health care reform, stem cell research and the death penalty.

Bishop Cupich will be replacing Bishop William Skylstad, who is retiring after 50 years in the priesthood.

We are expecting a press conference with the announcement Wednesday, although the time is still to be determined.

Watch KREM 2 News at 6:00 p.m. tonight for Jane McCarthy's interview with Bishop Skylstad as he prepares for retirement.
