A ROMAN Catholic Priest was charged with stealing $1.3 million from his parish over seven years to pay for male escorts, hotels, meals and clothing.

Reverend Kevin J. Gray, 64, turned himself in to authorities today and is scheduled to be arraigned later in the day at Connecticut's Waterbury Superior Court, the Hartford Courant reported.

The Hartford Archdiocese said it discovered unauthorised payments made using funds from the Sacred Heart/Sagrado Corazon parish during a routine review. The archdiocese referred the matter to police in May.

Gray’s alleged theft began in January 2003. He reportedly failed to comply with the requirements that parishes work with a financial council on fiscal matters and issue annual financial reports to the archdiocese.

Gray has been described as a popular priest in Waterbury and was placed on medical leave in April.

Reverend John P. Gatzak, director of communications for the Hartford Archdiocese, said in a statement that the archdiocese is “deeply saddened by the events which have recently had such a profound effect on Sacred Heart/Sagrado Corazon parish."

Police have alleged Gray spent money on luxury hotels and expensive clothing labels as well as paying the college tuition and rent of two men he met.
