A local councillor has said there should be no hiding place for the perpetrators of institutional sex abuse.

Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McLaughlin made the comment after victims of abuse called on the Assembly to set up an inquiry into abuse in Catholic Church-run care homes.

A number of local survivors were among those who delivered a letter to the First and Deputy First Minister at Stormont last week.

Colr McLaughlin said: "I understand that First Ministers, Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness have agreed to meet with representatives of Sexual Abuse Victims.

"I fully support the victims in their demands for a full and open investigation into institutional sexual abuse that took place in this jurisdiction.

"There should be no hiding place for anyone who was involved in this vile activity and no institution of Church or State should be immune from the wide ranging investigation that is required."
