Father Sam Ciccolini

A Catholic priest facing federal charges for allegedly failing to report all of his income has temporarily stepped down as leader of the rehab center he founded.

Father Sam Ciccolini, 66, of Akron, was charged with one count of structuring financial transactions to evade reporting requirements and one count of making and subscribing a false tax return, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Authorities said between April and June 2003, Ciccolini deposited the money in 139 cash deposits at banks around Akron. On his individual income tax return form, Ciccolini left more than $100,000 of his income unreported, authorities said.

Altogether, he deposited more than $1 million, prosecutors said.

According to a statement issued Wednesday, Ciccolini has taken a voluntary leave from the Interval Brotherhood Home in Akron until this matter is resolved. The home, founded by Ciccolini, helps people who are addicted to alcohol and drugs.

“The issues facing Father Sam involve his personal banking transactions and his individual tax returns. Since this matter involves his personal activities, there has been no effect on IBH’s financial. These issues do not include or impact IBH,” Interval Brotherhood Home said in its statement.

Ed Stanford will serve as interim executive director during this time.
