Groups representing the victims of sexual abuse have called upon Pope Benedict XVI to dismiss Cardinal Bernard Law from his post as archpriest of St. Mary Major basilica.

The American cardinal—who resigned as Archbishop of Boston in 2002 amid emerging revelations of his failure to address sex-abuse complaints—will play a prominent role in ceremonies at the Roman basilica on August 5. Critics of the Vatican response to the sex-abuse scandal argue that Cardinal Law’s continued presence in a prominent position signals that Church leaders are still prepared to protect prelates who mishandled the crisis.
