Father Michael Rodriguez, the parish preist of San Juan Bautista Catholic Church, has told readers of the El Paso Times, that “every single Catholic, out of fidelity to charity and truth, has the absolute duty to oppose (1) the murder of unborn babies, and (2) any and all government attempts to legalize homosexual unions.” He has strongly pushed the “precious and infallible teachings of Holy Mother Church.” Unfortunately, what he has pushes is largely those beliefs which would hurt women and lesbians and gays.

He also stated “a Catholic would be guilty of the most grievous sin of omission if he/she neglected to actively oppose the homosexual agenda.” He also wrote “I sincerely hope and pray that all El Paso Catholics will take to heart the precious and infallible teachings of Holy Mother Church in the moral sphere, particularly those most relevant to our city at this critical juncture.”

At one point, Father Rodriguez would have had no rights what so ever in the colonies that became the United States of America. Under British rule, Catholics had no rights at all, including no rights to hold office or vote. Indeed, two of the signers of the Declaration of Independence could not vote or hold office under British rule. Nor could they have their marriage rights recognized.

Of course, it should be noted that he went on to attack the ‘homosexual agenda’ by stating that it “thrives on deception and conceals its wicked horns under the guises of ‘equal rights,’ ‘tolerance,’ ‘who am I to judge?,’ etc.” Indeed, who is he to judge since the Bible states rather emphatically that only God has the right to judge humanity. As for the wickedness, that is baffling since most lesbians and gays appear to be just as law abiding as any other person, and do not seem to be given to bursting into orgies at the drop of a hat.

In fact, what Father Rodriguez is busy pushing is the idea that homosexuality is, indeed, given to wanton sexual expression and decadence. The character of Hedonismbot from Futurama comes to mind when dealing with these stereotypes. The kind of character given to sexual and moral decadence, the kind of person who goes from sexual encounter to sexual encounter, and the kind who does not care about their sexual partners.

Don Juan also comes to mind. In fact, there are hundreds, if not millions of examples of straight women and men who engage in the kind of sexual actions that the Catholic Church and their Evangelical allies believe only lesbians and gays engage in.

He went on to write “While it’s true that a majority of the citizens in a democracy has the political power to impose its ‘morality’ on society, this juridical reality has no bearing whatsoever on the intrinsic moral value of actions. Abortion and homosexual acts are unequivocally intrinsic moral evils. And friends, this objective truth doesn’t depend on the opinion of the majority. Frighteningly, if the majority chooses to deny the objective moral order, then we will all suffer the pestiferous consequences. I urge all of the Catholic faithful to treat homosexuals with love, understanding, and respect. At the same time, never forget that genuine love demands that we seek, above all, the salvation of souls. Homosexual acts lead to the damnation of souls.”

C.D. Kirven of GetEqual Now responded to Father Rodriguez’ editorial “A sign of the decline of humanity is hate speak and misinformation coming from priests. The irrespobsibility of intolerance served up as truth to the public by God’s spiritual leaders. Tolerance is about bearing with but acceptance is about love. I think its time church and state got a divorce. The thing that always amazes me about this is judgement itself is a sin and LGBT teens take in this kind of hate in a way that it becomes a part of them. It drives self hate and this is plan irresponsible. There has to come a time when you should be willing to contribute to the greater good. Gay is ok and the 1st amendment gives you the right to publicly hate me but no one gives you the right to God because he belongs to all of us. That’s why there are so many religious practices and various faiths. Faith is about love and acceptance period!”

The Catholic Church has used homosexuality as a means to scapegoat a group of people for their own woes, and specifically for the child sexual abuse scandal that has been unfolding within the Church for the past two decades.
