A former fundraising coordinator at a northwest side Catholic school was charged today with stealing almost $52,000 that was supposed to lower tuition costs for underprivileged children, authorities said.

Yolanda Kozicz, 41, of Chicago, was charged with theft from a school, following her arrest Tuesday when she showed up to work in a north suburbs, according to a release fron the Cook County state's attorney's office.

Kozicz was the fundraising coordinator for St. Pascal's School in Portage Park for seven years, according to prosecutors. The school purchased gift cards from retailers at a reduced rate then resold them in order to raise money for its tuition reduction incentive program.

When Kozicz took over the position, the school had $25,000 in cash and $20,000 worth of gift certificates.

Eventually, school board members began to notice that the program was generating less and less profit and Kozicz wasn't providing financial reports.

She was forced out of her position as coordinator in early 2008, and the Cook County state's attorney's office and the Archdiocese of Chicago began a joint investigation into program's finances. Prosecutors say the investigation uncovered that the account only had $4,300 in cash and $30 worth of gift cards.

Kozicz posted bail after her arrest and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on August 10.
