Diocese of Venice officials confirmed today that the embattled priest from St. Leo's Catholic Church in Bonita Springs had fathered a child-- meanwhile Rev. Stan Strycharz spoke out for the first time regarding his dismissal.

Parishioners Richard and Maureen Schulze, who also co-chair the building campaign for the church's ongoing expansion, wrote to parishioners with dismay about how Bishop Frank Dewane announced the dismissal of Strycharz. What was said by Dewane had led to an uproar at the church after the 10 a.m. Mass on the Saturday that followed Dewane's July 23 decision to place Strycharz on administrative leave.

The Schulzes quoted Dewane from a church transcript: "I don't know if Fr. Stan has ever talked to you. He does have a child and it's very much in this vein that my concerns are, and have been, and many of the faithful here in the parish have brought concerns to me..."

Diocese spokesman Bill Reddy said he couldn't confirm whether those were Dewane's exact words. He did, however, confirm that Dewane was long aware that Strycharz fathered a child two or three years ago and that both men had spoken of it.
