A review of child protection at a leading Roman Catholic school hit by a paedophile scandal is to be carried out by a senior lawyer.

Lord Carlile of Berriew will examine how St Benedict's in Ealing, and the Ealing Abbey Benedictine monastery to which it is linked, deals with suspected and proven abusers.

The review follows the conviction of monk David Pearce for child sex offences and a report by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, which identified six cases involving former teachers or monks.

Father Pearce, the former head of St Benedict's School, was jailed for eight years last October for indecently assaulting five boys between 1972 and 2007. Isleworth crown court heard how he had used “charm” and “guile” to “control” his victims.

It also emerged that he had been allowed to sexually exploit a sixth form pupil despite years of concerns about his behaviour.
