A Catholic priest is to go on trial accused of child sex abuse offences.

Father James Donaghy, 52, faces 14 charges, including multiple counts of indecent assault and attempts to commit buggery.

The offences are alleged to have been committed by the former Bangor parish priest on dates between 1983 and 2000.

Donaghy, of Lady Wallace Drive, Lisburn, Co Antrim, has stood down from clerical duties but is still regarded as a member of the Catholic clergy.

He is reported to have been working for an airline handling agent at Belfast International Airport prior to being charged earlier this year.

Donaghy appeared before Belfast Magistrates' Court on Friday for a preliminary enquiry into the case.

A Court Service spokeswoman confirmed he had been committed for Crown Court trial on a date to be fixed.

The accused was released on continuing bail until the hearing gets underway.
