Dozens of fresh charges have been laid against a former Hunter Valley Anglican youth worker who is accused of abusing boys in his care.

Sixty-year-old James Michael Brown, known as Jim, appeared briefly in Maitland Local Court today where 28 fresh child sex abuse charges were laid against him.

That brings the total number of offences to 68, with eight alleged victims.

Police documents tendered in court allege Brown had sexual intercourse and committed acts of indecency with boys in his care at Kurri Kurri and Bathurst, in the state's central west.

He was Anglican youth church leader at the time of the alleged offences which date back to 1974.

Wearing a blue hooded jumper, baggy jeans and joggers, Brown - who is now a member of the Baptist church - showed no emotion as his case was mentioned.

He has been granted continuing bail but must report to Raymond Terrace police daily.

The case been adjourned to Newcastle Local Court in October.
