Following an audit that revealed the former pastor's mismanagement of parish funds, more than 60 churchgoers came out for the 9 a.m. Mass at the Roman Catholic Church of St. Gregory Barbarigo today.

A recent investigation by the Archdiocese of New York found that the pastor, the Rev. Thomas Kreiser, who abruptly resigned in June for a variety of personal reasons, mismanaged parish funds. Although it did not specify the amount of the money misappropriated, a notice published in the church bulletin stated that the money was returned to the parish.

But the notice also stated that the parish's finance council and the Archdiocesan audit agreed that the parish has serious financial problems.

Most of the parishioners at the morning Mass declined to comment after being urged to do so by a deacon, but some offered good wishes for Kreiser, who is seeking treatment for his difficulties, according to the Archdiocese.

Pat Horan of Stony Point said despite the difficulties, she and her fellow parishioners kept their faith strong.

"We had a problem in the parish, but it's a wonderful parish and nothing will change that," she said.
