Former Nepean teacher arrested for indecent assault

A former Ottawa priest who taught at St. Pius X High School was charged by Ottawa police with one count of indecent assault as a result of a historical sexual assault investigation on Wednesday, Aug. 11.

Kenneth O’Keefe, 79, was arrested in Toronto on Aug. 11 and is being held pending a show cause hearing that was to take Wednesday morning.

“I am grateful to the leadership of the congregation of St. Basil (the Basilian Fathers) for taking immediate responsibility for the matter which concerns a member of their religious community,” said Terrence Prendergast, Archbishop of Ottawa, in a press release.

“As Fr. O’Keefe is the second priest who taught at St. Pius X High School to be criminally charged in recent weeks, I want to assure the community of St. Pius X of my pastoral concern and personal support,” said the archbishop.

The investigation started in July after a complaint was lodged about inappropriate contact between a Roman Catholic priest and a teenage male that allegedly occurred in Ottawa in 1972.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ottawa police service sexual assault/child abuse section at 613-236-1222, ext. 5944, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477 (TIPS).
