A Taoist priest whose thousands of followers include Jack Ma Yun, founder of e-commerce firm Alibaba, and Hong Kong-raised singer and actress Faye Wong is being investigated for rape.

Li Yi allegedly raped a college student in 2004 or 2005 and then tried to buy her silence for 7,000 yuan (HK$7,995).

"The rumor about the rape has been circulating around the temple for a long time," a former follower of the priest at the Shaolong Taoist Temple near Chongqing was quoted as saying by mainland newspapers.

The local committee for religious affairs as well as the police are reportedly looking into the allegation, though some officers claimed to be in the dark about the case.

Li, who counts Ma and Wong among about 30,000 followers, is renowned for running high-priced health and philosophy programs. AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE
