The Diocese of Harrisburg welcomes its 10th Bishop. Bishop Joseph McFadden was installed Wednesday afternoon at St. Patrick Cathedral. He was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in June.

Bishop McFadden follows Bishop Kevin Rhoades, who was transferred to South Bend- Fort Wayne, Indiana last year.

Bishop McFadden comes to central Pennsylvania from the eastern side of the state, where he served as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He earned a degree in political science and was a high school basketball coach for seven years before entering the seminary.

"I'm deeply grateful to our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, for his confidence in appointing me as the 10th Bishop of Harrisburg," said Bishop McFadden.

Hundreds of Catholics attended the installment ceremony. The mass began with a procession of religious leaders and a traditional knock at the cathedral door. During the ceremony, the Bishop spoke about topics like gay marriage and clergy sexual abuse.

"To those who are victims, especially here in Harrisburg, I express my deepest sympathy for what you have endured, in the name of the church, I apologize for the injustice," said Bishop McFadden.

The Harrisburg Diocese is home to about 230,000 catholics in 89 parishes.
