Fr Eugene Boland - who was administrator of St Joseph's Parish, Galliagh, for several years - took "administrative leave" from his current parish in Killyclogher, Co Tyrone following Mass on Sunday last.

The Moville native shocked tearful parishio ners when he told them he was taking leave from his duties due to a "personal crisis".

The allegation is believed to centre on a woman who is alleging the priest kissed her when she was a 15 year-old in the Galliagh parish. Fr Boland served in Galliagh during the 1980s and 1990s.

He is now the focus of a police investigation into the safety and welfare of children.

The latest controversy in the Derry diocese has been met with disbelief by members of his former Galliagh congregation, many of whom offered messages of support for the cleric this week.

One woman, who did not wish to be named, said: "Fr Boland is a good priest. I just hope he can come out of all of this."

His brother Fr Declan Boland, who is a parish priest in Strabane, was this week inundated with messages of support for him and his family.

Fr Eugene Boland (63) was ordained in St Pius X Church in Moville in 1973.
