The Rev. Terry McDowell, a Baptist pastor, has been charged with one count of child molestation involving a family friend's child, officials said.

St. Louis County police said that McDowell, 49, of the 9200 block of Alpine Drive in St. Louis, had inappropriately touched a child younger than 4 while baby-sitting at a location in the county.

He was charged Friday and held in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

Police said the case originated from a call to a state hot line. The child and her parents live in Jefferson County.

McDowell is the pastor at Gateway Southern Baptist Church, 4011 Tholozan Avenue, in St. Louis, but the victim's family is not connected to the church, said police Sgt. Gary Guinn.

He said no one else has come forward with accusations.

The Ultimate St. Louis Bride Guide website reported that McDowell said in a past interview that he was an ordained minister and had been performing weddings throughout the St. Louis area since 1999.

Police asked that anyone with information about McDowell call them at 314-889-2341.
